Foot/Ankle Ice Wraps

Most foot pain is caused by shoes that do not fit properly. Foot pain originates in the toes or in the front or back of the foot, and may not necessarily develop because of some injury or trauma to the foot. Foot pain could be caused by acute trauma or an overuse injury from exercise or sports. It is pertinent to note that many types of pain in the foot may have nothing to do with the foot or the leg, but rather a problem in the lower back.

However, patients that have foot pain due to a pinched nerve in the low back will generally suffer from a good deal of leg pain associated with the foot pain. Nearly all cases of foot pain can be attributed to low back, ill-fitting shoes, high impact exercise and certain medical conditions. It would be very uncommon to have isolated foot pain due to a problem in the low back without any leg pain. Foot pain without related leg pain is usually due to a problem localized to the foot itself.

Depending on the lower back diagnosis, specific types of foot pain symptoms and other symptoms may include:

Restricted ability to bring the foot up (heel walk). This specific symptom is characterized by an inability to lift the foot upward and may be accompanied by lack of sensation or numbness in the middle lower leg and foot. Heel walk may occur if one of the spinal nerve roots in the lower back that innervates the sciatic nerve is impacted.

Foot heaviness or weakness (foot drop). Often originating from a spinal nerve root in the lower back, foot drop refers to a weak or heavy feeling that makes it difficult or impossible to flex the ankle and lift the front of the foot up. Heavy feet ailment is a common condition; people suffer from this condition irrespective of their level of activities. Heaviness in foot quite often occurs temporarily. Foot drop due to a L5 nerve root problem will usually generate pain that radiates down the outside of the calf and over the top of the foot to the big toe.

Difficulty walking on tiptoes.Bottom of foot pain may arise if the sciatic nerve’s S1 spinal nerve root is impacted. Typical symptoms of pain in the bottom of the foot may include weakness in the gastonemius muscle, making it tough to walk on the tiptoes, lift up the heel off the ground. It gets hard to even complete everyday activities like walking or driving.

Cold Pack for Foot Pain: Cold pack can make a big difference in the way your body recovers. After an injury, your body needs to repair itself. During the phase of the injury, the blood vessels around the injured tissues open up. The increased blood flow often causes the healthy tissues surrounding the injury to swell and become inflamed. Cold pack is comfortable to use. A cold pack will immediately reduce swelling and allows room for healing. Foot and ankle pain patients must go for cold pack because it not only lowers the skin temperature, but also slows the metabolic rate of the injured tissues. Cold pack slows the body’s release of chemicals that dilate the blood vessels, further helping to reduce blood flow to the area.
